Rebecca Heywood

I am a ceramicist creating slipcast pieces that combine natural, hand made qualities with the industrial process of mould making.

My forms are discovered through pouring plaster onto sheets of manipulated and marked clay, my technique allows me to create and capture the natural qualities of both these materials.

My forms are irregular and hand-made with contrast in both the surface and shape. Although the majority of my work is very sculptural some pieces have functional elements. I am inspired by organic surfaces and textures and the natural qualities of plaster in its different states.

Technical Information

I create my work through the method of mould making. Once I have produced my piece in plaster I make a mould of it so that I can recreate in clay. I make casts from the moulds using earthenware casting slip. The pieces are then fired to high bisc temperature,11600 . After the initial firing the pieces are glazed with alkaline glazes then refired to 10600.

Education and Exhibitions

I studied A-Levels at Huddersfield New College then went onto Batley School of Art and Design to do a Pre-BA Art Foundation. While at Batley I started to specialise in Ceramics and went on to study BA 3D-Ceramics at Loughborough University, Leicestershire. I graduated in July 2006.

My work was first exhibited at my final show at the end of my degree. Since leaving university I have exhibited at New Designers in London and exhibitions locally. I took part in the Huddersfield Host trail organised by the Arts Council in November 2006.
